What is the CIA Certification?

The CIA certification offered by The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) is the only internal auditor certification recognized around the world. Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are also trained in the area of auditing and perform some of the same tasks as a CIA, but the work of a CPA is usually limited to auditing the financial statements of a client company.

Why Pursue the CIA Certification?

Earning your CIA will provide a greater salary boost than moving to a bigger city, changing to a larger organization, or even gaining years of experience. According to the IlA, the median salary of auditors with CIA certification can be a much as 40% higher than their non-CIA-holding peers.

CIA is an internationally recognized designation. Going through the rigors of passing the CIA exam and meeting the ongoing education requirements of the lIA is a clear demonstration to your peers and your employer (current or future) of your passion for the internal auditing profession.

By joining the IIA, which is required for certification, auditors can dramatically expand their professional networks and connections through a host of conferences, educational events, meetings and more.

CIA Eligibility Requirements

A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university

Two years of internal auditing experience (reduced to one year with a master’s degree).
